Michail Lewschenkow had only been able to go to school for one year. He taught himself to read and write. Learning and teaching became his purpose in life, and he was soon working as the director of a village school. He married and he and his wife had a daughter. He was conscripted into military service in 1940 and captured by the enemy near Minsk. On 18 October 1941, he was on the transport of 2,000 prisoners of war to Buchenwald. He joined the camp resistance organization. On 10 April 1945, the prisoners of war were sent on a death march. He managed to flee and returned to his destroyed village. Both of his brothers had fallen in battle; his wife had died.
