Gerhard Wischer

Gerhard Wischer was born in Berlin in 1903. After finishing school, he enlisted in the army, where he served from 1922 to 1926. Wischer took part in the Beer Hall Putsch in Munich in 1923. In 1926, he began studying medicine and graduated in 1933.

From 1934 to 1938, Wischer worked as an assistant doctor at the Arnsdorf sanatorium and nursing home.  In 1937, he joined the NSDAP, and became the director of the Waldheim sanatorium a year later. There, Wischer was directly involved in the Nazi “euthanasia” program, and participated as an “expert” in the selections in concentration camps between 1941 and 1943.

The Soviet secret service arrested Gerhard Wischer on October 15, 1945. The reason given for his arrest was “killing of sick people.” He was first sent to the Special Camp No. 1 in Mühlberg, then transferred to Special Camp No. 2 in 1948. There, he worked as a camp doctor.

In 1950, he was transferred to the Waldheim Penitentiary. The GDR judiciary sentenced him to death in the Waldheim Trials for his role in the murder of sick people through “euthanasia”. His execution was carried out on November 4, 1950.
