Former Storage Depot

Used as a grain depot at first, the building housed the "Museum of Anti-fascist Resistance" beginning in 1985. Today, the exhibition "Buchenwald. Ostracism and Violence 1937 to 1945" is on view here, covering three floors.

View across the site to the former depot building. It is large and long. In the foreground, the ground plans of the former barracks can be seen in darkness.

The left wing of the former chamber building can be seen. The staircase is missing the outer wall on the side facing the photographer. The opening is used on the first floor by a larger group of people as an entrance to the building. People are climbing up and down through the stairwell. Through the opening on the second floor, two NVA soldiers can be seen running down the stairs. To the left of the staircase and in the foreground of the picture, remains from the demolition of the camp can be seen.

Commissioned with creating a memorial, the "Museum für Deutsche Geschichte" in East Berlin halted the demolition work that was underway at the camp in late 1953. The depot was preserved, and until 1977 it was used as a grain storage facility for a nearby collectivized farm.

After thorough renovation, the new "Museum of Anti-fascist Resistance," at the time the largest exhibition of its kind, was installed in the building. On the third floor, the archive, collections, and library of the National Buchenwald Monument were provided with new, modern offices.

Today, on all three floors one can view the permanent exhibition "Buchenwald. Ostracism and Violence 1937 to 1945," which opened in 2016.
