The ‘History not Myths’ project has been campaigning against historical revisionist narratives in Thuringia and beyond since August 2024. The website classifies current debates, analyses social media posts and deciphers revisionist codes. The site also provides background information on recurring myths and maps right-wing extremist attempts to rewrite history.
The website is the centrepiece of ‘History instead of myths’: Here you will find a news blog, a section with background information on classic, historical revisionist legends and, above all, an overview map of where and by whom myths are reproduced in Thuringia. The website is constantly growing and is designed to be participatory - information on local historical revisionism or guest contributions from experts and other interested parties are explicitly welcome.
The special focus of the 2024 project was on supporting the state elections: The AfD's Thuringia programme, speeches, election campaign events and the party's social media posts were closely scrutinised. The mixed right-wing scene of Monday walkers, coronavirus deniers and the Reichsbürger scene also spread historical revisionist myths and was therefore also under observation.
The project, which is based at Friedrich Schiller University Jena, was realised with funding from the Foundation Remembrance, Responsibility and Future (EVZ), the resources of the Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorials Foundation and the ‘Weltoffenes Thüringen’ network. The need to expose right-wing extremist historical revisionism is greater than ever before - the ‘History instead of Myths’ project, which will come to an end in April 2025, is therefore being actively pursued.
