Weimar - Buchenwald

City and camp

There are various sites of remembrance and commemoration outside the memorial in the city of Weimar and on the Ettersberg.

Areas and functions

The demolition measures carried out in the 1950s left only a few buildings standing on the grounds of the former inmates’ camp.

SS area

Perpetrator sites

Apart from the command headquarters, service buildings and caserns, the SS area also encompassed recreation grounds for the guard units.

Cemeteries

Tribute to the dead

Graves of the victims of Buchenwald Concentration Camp and Buchenwald Special Camp are located at various sites on the Ettersberg.

Commemorative sites

Forms of commemoration

Memorial markers at various locations on the camp grounds commemorate the victims of the concentration camp as well as Special Camp No. 2.

Memorial complex

Political symbolism

The Buchenwald Memorial on the south slope of the Ettersberg was dedicated in 1958 as the first national memorial of the GDR.
