FAQ

Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about visiting the memorial with a group as well as opportunities for funding your visit.

Do I have to register my group in advance?
Yes. Advance registration of your group is essential. And we request that you register even if you are thinking of coming independently because we are unable to make you an offer for a guided tour due to high demand. A visit to the permanent exhibition on the history of the concentration camp always requires advance online ticket reservation (whether or not you take a guided tour beforehand).

Who can take advantage of the educational offers?
Our educational offers are geared primarily for school classes (9th year and higher), youth groups, and young adults who have prepared for their visit to the memorial in the framework of school instruction or a political education programme.
The minimum age for participation is 15. The maximum group size is 30.

What does an educational offer cost?
Irrespective of the duration of the offer, the one-off costs for the educational support of adults are €80 per group of up to 15 people and €120 per group of more than 15 and up to 30 people. Reduced rates are €40 per group of up to 15 people and €60 per group of more than 15 and up to 30 people.
All other offers (e.g. admission to the permanent exhibitions) are free of charge.

How much time should I allow?
The amount of time you need depends on the educational programme you are planning. The more time you plan for a visit to the memorial, the more enduring the educational experience will be.
For an initial visit with a short programme (guided tour with discussion, time for organizational matters and a break), please allow at least 4,5 hours.
A visit to one of our permanent exhibitions requires at least one additional hour.

Are there offers for groups in foreign languages?
To a limited degree, our educational offers are also available in the following languages: English, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Hungarian, and Romanian.

What should I be aware of when coming with a group?
Coaches can park in the memorial coach park free of charge.
Arriving by public transport: Bus line 6 (for example from Weimar Station) stops at the memorial hourly (download timetable). Please note that different timetables apply on weekdays, weekends, and bank holidays.

Travelling to the memorial by public transport with school groups from Thuringia
The Verkehrsverbund Mittelthüringen (VMT) offers to plan trips for general and vocational school groups of 16 persons or more from the school or institution to the Buchenwald Memorial and back by bus, train, and tram.
You will find further information and the online form for your order here.

What should I be aware of when preparing for a visit to the memorial?
The more thoroughly you prepare for your visit to the memorial, the more enduring the learning experience will be. Consult the pages on preparation and follow-up for more information.

What should I be aware of during the visit to the memorial?
The Buchenwald Memorial is a place of commemoration where human beings suffered and died. When visiting, care should be taken to behave in a manner appropriate to the character of the site.
We request appropriate clothing. Articles of clothing and symbols manufactured or distributed within what is generally recognized as the right-wing extremist milieu are prohibited.
Smoking is prohibited on the grounds of the former inmates’ camp. Visitors should also refrain from eating or drinking there. Please also observe the general visitor regulations.

Are there restroom facilities at the Buchenwald Memorial?
Yes, there are sufficient restroom facilities for groups at the memorial.

To what extent is the Buchenwald Memorial accessible for persons with mobility impairments?
The Visitor Information Centre, most of the exhibition buildings, the museum café, and the archive and library are accessible barrier-free (ramps, lifts, DIN-standard restroom facilities for wheelchair users).
The former inmates’ camp is only partially accessible for persons with limited mobility. You will receive assistance in the Visitor Information Centre.

Is it possible to purchase food / a meal at the memorial?
The Museumscafé Paul operated by the Lebenshilfe Weimar serves simple meals.
As the café’s capacity is limited, it is advisable to make a reservation, order the food, and make your payment in advance if you are coming as a group.
During the summer months, we recommend that visitors also bring their own beverages with them (e.g. in refillable bottles).
You will find information on meals served in the framework of multi-day seminars with overnight accommodations in the Young People’s Centre here.

Is it permissible to take photographs or films at the memorial?
The taking of photographs and the making of film and sound recordings are prohibited during participation in all analogue and digital educational offers. Exceptions (e.g. for a school film project) require prior  written permission from the Strategic Communication and Public Relations Department.

Where is it possible for a group to carry out individual commemoration?
Individual commemoration of concentration camp inmates is possible, for example, at the monument to all victims on the former muster ground and at the monuments to specific victim groups.
Individual commemoration on victims of the Soviet Special Camp No. 2 at Buchenwald is possible at the place of mourning in the graveyard downhill from the exhibition building.
