When Lee Miller entered the recently liberated Buchenwald concentration camp on April 15, 1945, she created some of the most powerful photographic records of the site. Her intention was to document – but her images go far beyond mere evidence. Influenced by her background as a surrealist artist, Miller's photographs combine documentary accuracy with artistic sensitivity, formal design, and a powerful visual language.
This exhibition places Lee Miller's artistic photographs on display in two locations: the art exhibition at the Buchenwald Memorial and at the MBooks Gallery in Weimar. The exhibition will be on display from April 9th until August 3rd in the art exhibition at Buchenwald Memorial and from April 9th to May 16th at MBooks Gallery in Weimar. Through this exhibition, the curators, Dr. Katharina Günther and Mackenzie Lake hope to show the link between the classic city of Weimar and the Buchenwald concentration camp that caught the eye of the war correspondent and artist Lee Miller in 1945.
We cordially invite you to the opening of the exhibition on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at Galerie MBooks, Marktstraße 16 in Weimar.
