In November 1943, the Germans used the fire at the University Auditorium in Oslo as a pretext to close the university and arrest over 1,000 students. They were considered a resistance cell. Among them was medical student Elling Kvamme. In early 1944, he was transported to the Buchenwald concentration camp along with over 300 fellow students. The SS intended to win the Norwegians over to National Socialism there. But the students refused and showed solidarity with their fellow prisoners: they distributed Red Cross packages and provided medical assistance. In the spring of 1945, Elling Kvamme returned home. Like his father, he became a doctor and later worked as a professor at the University Hospital in Oslo.
