Subcamp Portal
By mid-1944, over half of all Buchenwald concentration camp prisoners were held in subcamps. Companies, municipalities, government agencies, and military units exploited these prisoners for their labor there. In total, over 140 subcamps were under the jurisdiction of the Buchenwald concentration camp. They stretched from the Rhine and Ruhr rivers in the west to the Elbe River in the east. At times, they even extended as far as France, Belgium, and Poland. Twenty-seven of them were exclusively for women, where female prisoners were forced to work for the German arms industry.
Our subcamp portal provides basic information on all of the Buchenwald concentration camp's subcamps.
