When Lee Miller entered the recently liberated Buchenwald concentration camp on April 15, 1945, she created some of the most powerful photographic records of the site. Her intention was to document – but her images go far beyond mere evidence. Influenced by her background as a surrealist artist, Miller's photographs combine documentary accuracy with artistic sensitivity, formal design, and a powerful visual language.
This exhibition places Lee Miller's artistic photographs on display in the art exhibition at the Buchenwald Memorial. Through this exhibition, the curators, Dr. Katharina Günther and Mackenzie Lake hope to show the link between the classic city of Weimar and the Buchenwald concentration camp that caught the eye of the war correspondent and artist Lee Miller in 1945.
