Together with his brother and mother, Ralph Klein survived in Hungary. After great success as coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv and the Israeli national team, Ralph Klein accepted the offer to return to his native country as national coach of the German national basketball team in 1983. Under his leadership, Germany, then a developing basketball nation, managed to qualify for the Olympic Games for the first time.

Ralph Klein is a basketball legend in Israel. Born in Berlin, he fled to Hungary with his family in 1939 to escape the Nazi terror. His father was deported to Auschwitz in 1943 and murdered.
