Visiting Restrictions for the Former Crematorium

From Tuesday to Thursday, access to the former crematorium is only possible between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. as part of guided tours conducted by the Memorial.

Opening Hours:
Monday: 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
Tuesday through Thursday: 10 a.m.–11 a.m. and 2 p.m.–6 p.m.
Friday through Sunday: 10 a.m.–6 p.m.

Last entry 30 minutes before closing time.

The 141 satellite camps of Buchenwald concentration camp New Website

In mid-1944, more than half of all prisoners at Buchenwald concentration camp were held in satellite camps. Companies, local authorities, government agencies and military units exploited their labour there.

Statement by the ICBD on the AfD party conference in Erfurt on 4 and 5

On 4 and 5 July 2026, the AfD is holding its national party conference in Erfurt – within sight of the bell tower of the Buchenwald Memorial and coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the NSDAP party conference in Weimar. On this occasion, the International Committee Buchenwald Dora and Kommandos (ICBD) expressly endorses the demand made by the International Auschwitz Committee on 11 February 2026: The Federal Government, the Federal Parliament or the Federal Council must finally create the conditions for proceedings to ban the AfD before the Federal Constitutional Court. It must be made clear that a party which is anti-constitutional and, in some respects, demonstrably far-right, must be reined in within the Federal Republic of Germany before it undermines democratic structures itself.

Is the keffiyeh banned at the Buchenwald Memorial? Our rules for a respectful visit – and where the red line is drawn

No, there is no blanket ban on wearing a keffiyeh (also known as a kufiya or 'Palestinian scarf') at the Buchenwald Memorial. The Foundation does not consider the keffiyeh to be anti-Semitic per se; what matters is the specific context and the intention behind wearing the keffiyeh.
