With a large-format camera, photographer Jürgen Pietsch pursues traces leading to the relics of the Mittelbau-Dora camp complex. These traces are to be found not only in the “parent” camp but also at the sites of the subcamps where human beings were worked to death building one new underground facility after the other. Pietsch’s photographs are literally “takes” – a “stocktaking” of things that remain concealed to the observer at first sight. They show what is still extant from the period 1944/45, ruins of buildings and industrial facilities whose builders and original purposes have all but fallen into oblivion.

Since 2000, the photographer has taken hundreds of pictures, only a small selection of which can be shown in the exhibition. Pietsch’s attention is directed towards the historical relics, not the people who look at them. The bare ground is just as important to him as monuments, buildings and seemingly insignificant stones or wall fragments, and on the whole the object is no less important to him than a castle or Romanesque church. The images are characterized by great clarity and provide the viewer with a new perspective undistorted by conventional ways of seeing.
