"...and then your second life starts." Portraits of the Witnesses
The approaching extinction of the first-hand witnesses to the National Socialist crimes against humanity as a challenge to the political-historical education work carried out by the concentration camp memorials has been a recurring theme in recent years. The Mittelbau-Dora Concentration Camp Memorial takes the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp as an opportunity to present some of these last witnesses in a photo exhibition. The exhibition presents portraits of survivors of the Mittelbau-Dora Concentration Camp, taken by the American photographer Alvin Gilens between 2005 and 2015 during the events celebrating the anniversary of the liberation. The photos are accompanied by biographies focussing on the subjects’ lives after liberation from the concentration camp. The texts convey the diversity of their lives, but also the services they rendered to the remembrance of the concentration camp past.
