Organizational preparation for a visit to the memorial

Registration

If you would like to visit Mittelbau-Dora Concentration Camp Memorial with your pupils, you should currently register with us about ten months in advance if possible. To register, you can use the online-registration form on this website or contact the visitor information centre by phone.

The staff of the concentration camp memorial would like to offer visiting school groups individual educational supervision. When you register, the visitor service will therefore ask you detailed questions about your wishes, about the pupils’ previous knowledge, and about the particularities of the group.

If you are planning a one-day programme or a several-day project at the memorial, please contact the memorial’s educational staff.

If you should not be able to arrive punctually on the day of your visit owing to unforeseen circumstances, please inform the memorial as soon as possible. If it is necessary for you to cancel a guided tour you have registered for, please do so at least 24 hours before the scheduled tour to avoid cancellation fees.

Public transport to the memorial

Public transport directly to the memorial is possible only by way of an on-call bus.

If you are not travelling to the memorial on your own bus, the visitor information staff will be happy to organize your group’s bus transfer from Nordhausen railway station to the memorial and back.

Another possible transportation mode is to take the Harzer Schmalspurbahn (HSB; Harz narrow-gauge railway) from Nordhausen to the Nordhausen-Krimderode stop. From there it is a 20-minute walk to the memorial on a clearly signposted path.

More information can be found here.

Additional information
Owing to the special character of the concentration camp memorial, we advise against planning visits to other institutions on the day of your visit to the memorial.

Where possible, we try to divide large school groups into smaller groups after arrival at the memorial.

The visit to Mittelbau-Dora Concentration Camp Memorial is also possible for persons confined to wheelchairs (also to a limited extent in the tunnel system). All buildings have barrier-free entrances. The museum building is furnished with a lift and a restroom for the disabled.

The temperature in the tunnel system is 8° C all year round. Please be sure to have sufficiently warm clothing with you, especially in the summertime.

Please see to it that your pupils wear clothing that is appropriate for the dignity of the site. Clothing and symbols whose content, manufacture and distribution are generally known to be carried out in the extreme right-wing milieu are prohibited.
