Outdoor Facilities

Visitors may tour the entire memorial site on their own. 

Guided tours of the outdoor facilities for individual visitors take place every 60 minutes between 10:30 am and 2:30 pm (only in German). The meeting point is located in front of the Visitor Information Centre and is marked with a "Guided Tour" sign.

Brochures, such as our "Visitors' Guide" (available in 11 langueages), and other leaflets are available at the Visitor Information Centre at the parking lot or for download.

Alternately, visitors can download our app "Buchenwald". Multimedia guides can also be borrowed on site. If you would like to borrow a large number of devices, please inform us by email at itour@buchenwald.de.

Large groups and school classes should use the registration form to book a guided tour.

Exhibitions

To visit the exhibition "Buchenwald. Ostracism and Violence 1937 to 1945" on the history of the Buchenwald Concentration Camp, visitors must reserve a time slot in advance.

No reservation is required for further exhibitions.

Introductory Film

The 30-minute, free introductory film runs every hour on the hour from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm (approx. 30 min., German with English subtitles).

Versions with subtitles in French and for the hearing impaired, as well as other documentaries, for example about the Soviet Special Camp No. 2, can be viewed by prior arrangement with the Visitor Information Centre.

Registration is not necessary for individuals and small groups.

Large groups are requested to register with the Visitor Information Centre in advance by e-mail (information@buchenwald.de).

By appointment, the film can also be shown outside the regular times and on the half-hour. The cinema is located at the back of the Visitor Information Centre building at the parking lot.


Additional Practical Information

Clothing

Please wear clothing appropriate for a memorial site, which is also a cemetery. Buchenwald is located on the Ettersberg, which is over 480 m high. On site it is often cold and windy even on sunny days. We recommend warm clothing and sturdy shoes.

Children

If you come to the memorial with children, please make sure that you behave with them in a manner appropriate to the location. We recommend that you do not visit the museum, the detention cells, or the former crematorium with children under 12 years of age.

Discounts

Visiting the memorial and the exhibitions is free of charge. Fees are only charged for the use of additional educational offers such as participation in public tours or the loan of a multimedia guide device. (The multimedia guide is also available as a free App)

Tickets for public tours: €7.00 per person (adults) or €3.00 reduced (trainees, pupils, students, people with disabilities and social welfare recipients). For holders of the weimar card and members of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and the Deutscher Museumsbund (DMB), participation in public tours of the Buchenwald Memorial is free of charge. Young adults can also take advantage of our offer in the KulturPass app for 18-year-olds.

Dogs

Please note, that dogs are not permitted on the grounds of the former inmates' camp. It is also a cemetery. Exceptions are guide dogs for the blind and assistance dogs with corresponding identification jackets.

Duration of Stay

Due to the extensive grounds and the variety of information available, we recommend that you plan at least 3 hours for your visit to the memorial.

Food and Drink

Café Paul offers a selection of food and drinks. It located at the parking lot, next to the Visitor Information Centre. We ask for your understanding that due to the current tight personnel situation at Café Paul, the café is unfortunately only open to a limited extent or must remain closed completely on some days. Please check the website of Lebenshilfe-Werk Weimar/Apolda e.V. for opening hours.

Internet

Our OpenWLAN wireless connection is available free of charge in the Visitor Information Centre at the parking lot.

By Public Transport

The memorial can be reached by bus line 6, which departs hourly from Goetheplatz and the main train station (Hauptbahnhof) in Weimar in the direction of Buchenwald (not: Ettersburg). The journey takes about 20 minutes.

On weekends, the memorial can also be reached by bus line 4 in the direction of Ettersburg.

By Car or Coach

The Buchenwald Memorial is located about 10 km northwest of Weimar's city centre.

Motorway A4 (Frankfurt am Main – Dresden): Take Exit 48 "Nohra" towards Weimar, and then follow the signs to the Buchenwald Memorial (approx. 18 km)

Motorway A9 (Berlin – Munich): At Hermsdorfer Kreuz take the A4 towards Jena / Erfurt / Frankfurt am Main. After approx. 40 km, take Exit 48 "Nohra" towards Weimar, and then follow the signs to the Buchenwald Memorial (approx. 18 km)

Parking

A large number of free parking spaces are available on site.

Coaches may stop between the Visitor Information Centre and the International Youth Centre to load and unload passengers. For parking, please use the marked areas at the back of parking lot.

Electric Vehicles

There is an electric charging station provided by Stadtwerke Weimar (2 x type 2, 11 kW) at the central parking lot, near the entry driveway.

A ladenetz.de charging card is required to charge your vehicle.
